What is NASCAR Phoenix Raceway IV therapy?

It is a one liter IV drip given by a registered nurse. They come to your hotel, rental, home, or RV lot on race weekend. The most booked bags are the Hydrate IV ($150) and the Hangover IV ($295). Hydrate is for a day in the sun. Hangover is for the morning after. Each drip takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Most people feel better before the bag is done.

Built for race weekend

A NASCAR weekend at Phoenix Raceway is three days long. Some fans roll in Thursday with the RV. Others drive out from Phoenix or Scottsdale each morning. Either way, you sit in the sun for hours. You drink beer from the first green flag to the last lap. Then you do it again the next day.

The desert sun is strong in March. It is still warm in October. The grandstands have little shade. The infield has less. You lose water all day. You do not feel it until your head starts to pound.

A nurse comes to your hotel room, your rental, or your campsite where access allows. You get a full liter of fluids, vitamins, and the medicine you need. You feel better in about an hour. Then you head back to the track.

What a race weekend does to your body

All day sun in the grandstands

The stands face the sun for hours. There is not much shade. You sweat out water and salt without moving. By the last lap you are dry, sunburned, and tired.

Infield camping

The infield is the best seat in the house. It is also a parking lot with no shade. You sleep in an RV, wake up warm, and start again. Three days of that adds up.

Beer and long days

Beer at 10 am is part of race day. Alcohol pulls water out of your body. It burns through B vitamins. Add sun and you get a headache by the checkered flag.

The noise and the drive

Hours of engine noise wear you down. Then there is the drive out of the lots. It can take a long time. You get back to the hotel late and dry.

Spring break and Spring Training

The March race lands in the middle of Spring Training and spring break. Many fans catch a ballgame in Goodyear on Friday. Then they hit the race on Sunday. Two events in one weekend means double the sun and double the beer.

Why water alone will not fix it

When you are dry and hungover, your stomach is slow. Water sits there. Only a small part gets to your blood right away. An IV skips the stomach. It goes right to work.
